A college has confirmed it went into lockdown yesterday after a report of gunshot sounds near its campus.
Crawley College activated lockdown procedures shortly after 3pm yesterday (May 12) as police officers carried out extensive searches in the area.
A police helicopter was seen in the skies above Crawley while officers on the ground worked with senior leadership staff at the college.
A Crawley College spokeswoman said: “The college’s lockdown procedure was instigated for a very short period following reports of an incident in the vicinity to ensure the safety of our college community.”
Police later confirmed that no firearm was found.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Police received a report of possible gunshots being heard in the vicinity of Crawley College shortly after 3pm on Friday, May 12.
“Officers attended the area and carried out extensive enquiries, with the support of the National Police Air Service helicopter.
“They completed a thorough search of the area as a precaution and liaised with senior leadership at the college to keep everyone safe.
“No trace of a firearm was found and no further reports have been received by police. After initial enquiries, it is believed that the noises heard were fireworks.”
