With just days to go before the 2023 Oscars ceremony, all eyes are on Hollywood as we eagerly await this year’s big winners.
Will sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once win in all 11 of the multiverses — erm, we mean categories — that it’s been nominated in? As the film with the most Oscar 2023 nominations, including best picture and four acting nominations, its chances certainly look promising.
That said, perhaps fan-favourite The Banshees of Inisherin or Germany’s harrowing World War I drama All Quiet On The Western Front will emerge victorious. Each has nine nominations and with the latter sweeping the board at this year’s BAFTAs, maybe the same will happen across the pond.
Adrenalin junkie Tom Cruise may have missed out on a best actor nod this year but his potentially cinema-saving hit Top Gun: Maverick received six nominations, while Academy favourite James Cameron received four noms for CGI spectacle sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, including a shot at best picture.
How 2023 BAFTA winners may impact the Oscars
As awards season heats up, many look to the BAFTAs for an early indication as to who may come out on top at the Academy Awards, which typically take place just a few weeks afterwards. If we were to take any key information away from 2023’s BAFTA winners, it’s that the race is very much still largely unpredictable.
It was director Edward Berger’s devastating war epic All Quiet On The Western Front that took everyone by surprise with its seven wins. Becoming the first foreign language film to win more than four BAFTAs, Berger’s anti-war tale about a young soldier sent to the trenches during World War I earned 14 nominations and ultimately went home with statues for best film, best director, cinematography, best film not in an English Language, adapted screenplay, best sound and best original score.
Meanwhile, its fellow frontrunner, Martin McDonagh’s heartbreaker The Banshees of Inisherin, won just four awards, losing out in the best picture race but earning its young star Barry Keoghan a best supporting actor trophy.
Meanwhile, Everything Everywhere All At Once may have received 11 nominations – the most of any film this year – yet it only took home only one award for best editing out of its 10 BAFTA nods.
With so much unpredictability, only time will tell who the real winners of the 2023 Oscars will be – so watch this space.
