Drew Barrymore has admitted that her and self care are “not friends”, insisting that as a busy mother she often doesn’t have time for massages and working out.
The actor, 48, is raising daughters Olive, 10, and Frankie, eight, with her actor ex-husband Will Kopelman who she split with in 2016.
She told InStyle magazine: “My legs aren’t shaven. I try to clip my nails down because I don’t like dirt under them. I try to work out three times a week with girlfriends, and I usually make it two days a week.”
The star added: “When it comes to pampering, that’s where I think I get a little irritable, because I don’t have the time for it.
“Therefore, what am I? A failure because I’m not getting massages and mani-pedis? Well, then I guess I am.”
Barrymore explained that her “version” of self-care was “making a commitment to live a more peaceful life through less chaos”.
She shared: “Self-care for me is having my kids’ stuff organised to get out the door in the morning, lined up.
“That’s self-care. It doesn’t seem like it, but it is, because this f******g bubble bath approach is so irritating.
“That doesn’t bring me self-care or joy. Having my kids’ stuff in a system, lined up, their shoes and their jackets and their backpacks, that makes me feel like I won the morning.”
However, Barrymore – who is launching a line of cleaning products with brand Grove Collaborative – conceded that she still finds ways to help look after her mental health.
The star explained: “Well, candles are definitely a part of my self-care. I think they’re also an aesthetic thing. I think they’re also ritualistic. I also do therapy every week. In fact, I have my session today. That is self-care.”
She rose to fame starring in films such as E.T, 50 First Dates and Charlie’s Angels and now regularly appears as a talk show host.
