Council issues update after travellers set up camp in Swindon

A GROUP of travellers is being monitored by local authorities after pitching up on Swindon grassland.

Caravans started arriving and settling on Tovey Road, Pinehurst, on Thursday afternoon and by Friday morning there were reportedly 40 vehicles in the area.

This sparked concern for locals who recalled a previous group visiting the same area and leaving a mess afterwards.

But, the council has now provided an update to residents, telling them there will be no further action for now.

A spokesperson said: “A group of travellers not connected to any previous groups in Swindon had advised of their intentions on remaining in the area until March 12.

“The group have engaged with officers in discussions around their access to the area.”

Swindon Borough Council had offered the Chiseldon Firs site to the group, which was refused.

“The group remain peaceful and compliant and currently no action will be taken to remove the travellers from the area under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act,” the spokesperson added.

Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Police say they will continue to monitor and evaluate.

The group have been advised about waste removal and appropriate waste disposal options will be made available in the short term to ensure the area can be properly maintained.

If there are any concerns regarding behaviours and or activities these must be reported to Wiltshire Police.
