I almost didn’t recognise Cardi B with XXL blonde 70s disco curls

Cardi B is never one to shy away from experimentation when it comes to her hair and flips from black, to red, to pink to platinum, sometimes all in one week. Long, short, curly, straight, to the sky and to the floor; we’ve come to expect the unexpected. I mean, who could forget the wig with faces? So maybe that’s why we always recognise her instantly despite the constant change.

But that’s what really surprised me about her latest Instagram post. It took a second look for me to clock it was my babe Belcalis. I don’t doubt the sunglasses factored into my brain’s delayed identification, but the main culprit in the subterfuge was undoubtably Cardi’s giant, blonde, XXL, 70’s disco curls.

The huge, bouncy, blonde curls are pinned back at the sides with playful twists, and tendrils teased out around the face are a perfect finishing touch for the larger-than-life look.

There are just too many epic cultural references this ‘do is stirring in our hair hearts. We can’t tell if it belongs more on a 70s dance floor or under a southern pageant queen’s tiara. We can just hear Dolly Parton’s voice in our heads delivering her famous line; “The higher the hair the closer to God.”

Worn with a Cardi spin on a preppy Chanel fit, she just looks like a little doll that we are 100% not too old to play with.
