King Charles visited the Kellogg’s factory in Manchester this morning (January 20) and was seen making a joke about missing the brand’s 100th anniversary in the UK.

The Manchester site is the largest cereal factory in Europe and it produces popular breakfast cereals such as Corn Flakes, Frosties, Rice Krispies, Crunchy Nut and Coco Pops.

Corn Flakes and All-Bran were first introduced to the British public in 1922 so Kellogg’s celebrated a centenary in the UK last year.

The King who unveiled a plaque marking his visit and celebrating 100 years of “bringing breakfast to Britain”, sparked laughter when he said: “Sorry I’m a year late.”

During his visit to the factory, which has just under 400 employees, Charles explored the culinary centre, a new research and development hub.

He watched cooking demonstrations and saw the various cereals on offer.

He heard about the brand’s efforts to reduce salt and sugar content and enquired about the popularity of Coco Pops.

Charles also chatted to workers and was heard commenting that he thinks molasses is “very special”.

During his time at the plant, the King wore a white coat for a walk around the factory floor where he stopped and chatted to staff.

Earlier on Friday, the King visited GCHQ’s North West hub and has since arrived in Bolton to mark the town hall’s 150th year anniversary.
