Mike Tindall has revealed that he and his wife Zara realised they were suited on their first date because they “both quite like getting smashed”.

The former England rugby star, who is married to the King’s niece, has been getting to know his fellow contestants after arriving in the Australian jungle for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

Recalling the moment that he met Zara in Sydney in 2003, Tindall said he was drowning his sorrows after being dropped from the England starting line-up for their Rugby World Cup semi-final.

He said: “I was at the World Cup, she was out watching. I got dropped from the semi-final. I was p—-d off and so I went for a beer with another guy who got dropped and a guy who was over [in Sydney].

“They’d met her before and they introduced us and then got chatting.”

Owen Warner, an actor and fellow I’m A Celebrity contestant, pointed out that the couple would never have met had Tindall not been dropped.

“Best decision of Clive Woodward’s life!” he said of the England coach who went on to lead the team to victory.

Telling his campmates about their first date, Tindall went on: “First actual date, just went out for lunch locally. And ended up being quite a boozy one. Then we figured out that we both quite like getting smashed. It was a good start.”

The pair have previously spoken about how they became good friends before romance blossomed.

On their return to the UK in Dec 2003, Zara invited Tindall to the North Cotswold Hunt Ball. They began officially dating in April 2004.

From good friends to lovers

Zara has said: “He met me just after I’d found out my horse had injured himself, so I was quite low and vulnerable… He understands the pressures, and vice versa, which obviously helps, but it actually started from becoming very good friends.”

Tindall would later add in an interview: “We became mates, really. Eventually, it was one of those things where you realise you’re spending all your time with someone, and it went to the next level.”

He has revealed that Zara may fly out to Australia if he gets to the final of I’m A Celebrity.
