William and Kate, the new Prince and Princess of Wales, made a surprise appearance at Windsor Castle yesterday with Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The four surprised onlookers when they arrived unannounced to see the floral tributes that had been left at the palace gates.

The two couples arrived by car together and were then pictured walking down The Long Walk, before stopping to read many of the messages of condolence that had been written in tribute to the Queen. It was a clear display of togetherness from the brothers and their wives, who haven’t been pictured in public together since the annual Commonwealth Service in March 2020.

Both Kate and Meghan wore simple black dresses for the appearance, with William and Harry in classic suits with black ties.

A spokesperson on behalf of Prince William said that he invited his brother and sister-in-law to join him and Kate for the walkabout, reports The Guardian. Security barriers were put in place to allow them space to examine all the tributes, and they then spent about 40 minutes chatting to well-wishers who were offering condolences, before leaving in the same car. At one point, Meghan was seen giving a young girl a hug, while one onlooker gave Prince William a Paddington the Bear toy.

Harry and Meghan had been midway on a tour of Europe when the sad news of the death of the Queen was announced. It’s now expected that they will stay in the UK until the funeral on 19 September.

Now as heir to the throne, William has inherited the title previously used by his father, the Prince of Wales, while Kate is now known as Princess of Wales – a title famously associated with the late Princess Diana. Earlier in the week William released a moving statement in tribute to his late grandmother.

“On Thursday, the world lost an extraordinary leader, whose commitment to the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth was absolute,” he said. “So much will be said in the days ahead about the meaning of her historic reign. I, however, have lost a grandmother. And while I will grieve her loss, I also feel incredibly grateful. I have had the benefit of the Queen’s wisdom and reassurance into my fifth decade.

“My wife has had 20 years of her guidance and support. My three children have got to spend holidays with her and create memories that will last their whole lives… I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real.

“My grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love. All of the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary Queen. I will honour her memory by supporting my father, the King, in every way I can.”
