The fatal shooting of a man by police in south London has now been declared a criminal homicide investigation, the police watchdog has confirmed.
Chris Kaba, 24, died after being shot by armed police following a car chase in south London on Monday night.
Investigators from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who previously confirmed that Mr Kaba was unarmed said they had now launched a homicide investigation.
Mr Kaba was shot after police attempted to stop the Audi Q8 he was driving in the Streatham Hill area of Lambeth.
The vehicle had allegedly activated an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera suggesting it had been involved in a firearms incident in recent days.
But investigators from the IOPC have confirmed that the vehicle was not registered to Mr Kaba.
A spokesman for the IOPC said while it was now a criminal investigation this did not mean charges would necessarily follow.
Mr Kaba’s family had called for a homicide investigation to be launched and had accused the Metropolitan Police of racism.
