SWINDON-BORN celebrity Nick Hewer has embraced Colin Murray as the new host of Countdown following the departure of the popular daytime show’s former host.

Anne Robinson has decided to step down from the top job to spend more time with her family leading to the appointment of the Northern Irish sports pundit and television and radio presenter.

Murray wrote a Tweet reacting to his temporary appointment describing it as an ‘absolute honour’

It said: “I’m like the assistant manager, given the job until end of season. Earn respect of dressing room (@susie_dent @RachelRileyRR), get some points on the board, try to win a trophy! 75 games to get it right! Absolute honour. Fav show ever. July 14 to start of Nov.”

This prompted a positive response from the former Apprentice personality, who is also a former Countdown host himself.

“Colin, I’m truly delighted for you,” he said.

“A true fan of the show and a great presenter. I sense that this time, it’s permanent and you’ll be in that seat for years to come. Congratulations.”

This is a very different message to the one Mr Hewer had previously aimed towards the show’s Susie Dent, with the businessman taking a sly dig at a message Dent had sent to Robinson following her departure.

Dent had written a congratulatory message to Robinson for her decision to step down which said: “Some Countdown news. Wishing Anne all the very best in her new adventures with her grandchildren and beyond.”

Nick Hewer quote tweeted this message and implied that the Dictionary Corner staple was sucking up to her former colleague.

“Well that’s a sure fire certainty for Private Eye’s OBN [Order of the Brown Nose] award. Bravo Susie!” he said.

Murray had previously guest hosted the show in 2020 when Nick Hewer was presenting and had to shield at home because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Countdown bosses have confirmed he has already started filming on set in Salford and will be with the show until Autumn.
