‘The Games’: Tyson Fury is first guest star, but which celebrities are taking part?

The Games reboot makes its return to TV this week, with Tyson Fury confirmed as the first guest star for the celebrity sports contest.

Boxer Fury is just one of a star-studded line-up from the sporting world who will appear over the week to give pointers to the 12 famous contestants on how to up their game.

Here’s all you need to know about the new version of The Games – including who’s taking part, who the judges and hosts are, and which sports you can look forward to.

When is The Games on TV?

The Games makes its long-awaited return to TV for a rebooted series tonight (Monday, 9 May) at 9pm on ITV.

Celebrity contestants will then continue the competition throughout the week, with episodes broadcast at the same time each evening until the final on Friday, 13 May.

Fans of the series may remember that it originally broadcast on Channel 4, where it ran for four series between 2003 and 2006.

Who are the celebrities competing in The Games?

There are 12 celebrities lining up to compete in the series after taking on weeks of intensive training.

Super-fit famous contestants include former Strictly Come Dancing pro Kevin Clifton, ex-Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas, and model and TV star Christine McGuinness.

They’ll be joined by former Love Islanders Olivia Attwood and Wes Nelson, Mel B’s daughter Phoenix Brown, The Wanted’s Max George and Harry Potter actor Josh Herdman.

Look out for a battle of the soaps as Coronation Street‘s Colson Smith and Emmerdale‘s Rebecca Sarker both enter the contest.

Completing the line-up are newsreader Lucrezia Millarini and footballer and singer Chelcee Grimes, who’ll no doubt be putting the skills she’s learned from Freeze the Fear with Wim Hof to good use.

Who are the hosts and commentators?

Hosting the series will be This MorningDancing On Ice and Freeze the Fear presenter Holly Willoughby, and ex-cricketer and Top Gear star Freddie Flintoff.

They’ll have experts on hand in the form of ex-footballer and presenter Alex Scott as trackside reporter, and former footballer and presenter Chris Kamara as commentator.

A big-name line-up of sporting stars will make guest appearances each night to offer advice and insight, beginning with World Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury and Olympic Gold medallists heptathlete Denise Lewis and diver Matty Lee on Monday.

Tuesday features Olympians swimmer Tom Dean and diver Leon Taylor, while Wednesday welcomes javelin Paralympian Hollie Arnold and her coach David Arnold.

On Thursday, swimming and cycling Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey joins the team, and Friday’s final stars ex-England footballer Jermaine Jenas and Olympic Gold decathlete Daley Thompson.

Which sports will feature in The Games?

The contestants have had a crash course in various Olympic disciplines which will cover the athletics arena, gym, swimming pool and cycling track.

Events from Crystal Palace stadium include the 100m and 400m races, the hurdles, throwing the hammer and javelin

There’ll be a trip back to the London 2012 Olympics venue the Lee Valley VeloPark for cycling events, while pool events include swimming and synchronised diving.

Look out for some more unusual events, too, with speed climbing, canoe slalom and weight lifting.

Each evening’s episode is live coverage of the events, but will also feature recorded footage of how the celebrities trained for each discipline.

Much of the action is based at Crystal Palace throughout the week, where Friday’s final will air from as the celebrities attempt to top the medal table and be crowned the series winner.

The Games begins tonight (Monday) at 9pm on ITV.
