Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx reportedly helped Dave Chappelle fight off a man who rushed the stage and tackled the comedian Tuesday night during a stand-up set at the Hollywood Bowl as part of the Netflix Is a Joke festival.

According to the Associated Press, security guards also chased and overpowered the attacker, while Chappelle continued his performance. The man who tackled him was later taken away in an ambulance, before Chris Rock took the stage and made a crack about the man being Will Smith, who slapped Rock on stage at the Oscars in March.

The Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to EW’s request for more information on the incident, though, according to the local NBC affiliate, the LAPD indicated that the man was carrying a fake gun capable of ejecting a real knife blade from inside.

Chappelle eventually returned to the stage and joked about the scare.

“Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat,” Chappelle seems to be saying in a video from the event before he welcomes Foxx back to the stage to thank him for his assistance.

“I thought that was part of the show,” Foxx said, before the pair also recalled seeing Busta Rhymes approach them to help with the situation while backstage. “I’ve had an incredible time. This man is an absolute genius. We’ve got to make sure we protect him at all times, man.”

“I’ve been doing this 35 years. I just stomped a n—a backstage. Always wanted to do that,” Chappelle added. “I seen Busta Rhymes there, like, ‘That’s how you do it, dog.'”

According to the AP, Chappelle was attacked while wrapping up a routine about comedians worrying about personal security after Smith slapped Rock during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Representatives for Foxx, Chappelle, and Rhymes did not immediately respond to EW’s request for more information on the attack and its aftermath.
